A very excited friend phoned to say she’d been in her car and was (pleasantly) surprised to hear my interview with Donna on Premier Christian Radio. I’d been invited onto the mid-morning programme, ‘Faith Hope and Love’; so rather humbling to realise what we’d been chatting about ‘on air’ was actually heard! Premier Radio’s lovely presenter, Donna was asking me about The Sound of Musings as well as my own faith journey. Naturally, I was very happy to talk about how one very special and much-loved musical has inspired a whole book of spiritual reflections or ‘musings’.

…Baroness von Schraeder… suggests that Georg throws a ‘grand and glorious party’ to introduce her to all his friends…The promised party is indeed a grand and glorious event. The von Trapps’ once neglected Golden Ballroom is the one we glimpsed when Maria first arrived. It is now glittering with chandeliers and tiaras as honoured guests dance to the music of an orchestra.

………….Maria’s first dinner with the family fails to get off to the best of starts. She arrives rather late in the dining room as the family sit in silence, with plates of food going cold in front of them. It’s not just their glasses of water that are chilled, the whole atmosphere is frosty… unlike Robbie’s meal time…

It is almost impossible to actually say those words without the inflection of the melody, so used are we to the majestic overture to one of the most popular films ever made… …Like every compelling story, this one is about people; one particular nun and a wealthy but emotionally struggling family. Like every single human story, it has a framework – a space and place that holds the unfolding narrative. The opening credits give us a stunning backdrop, a context for the story that is about to be told… To Be Continued…

Rt Revd Martyn Snow, Bishop of Leicester says:

“I have many happy memories of watching the Sound of Music with my children – it became the sound track to several family holidays. So I encouraged Bryony to write her own “musings” as a fun way of helping others reflect on life, faith and their “favourite things”. Bryony has a beautiful style of writing which will help anyone find God in the ordinary.”

Jeff Lucas, Author, Speaker, Broadcaster says:

‘A brilliantly creative way to explore vital themes that emerge from a classic film, Bryony’s writing is heartwarming, winsome and encouraging. Buy the book and enjoy a delightful journey’

Revd Canon Michael Mitton, Writer, Spiritual Director, Speaker, Canon Emeritus Derby Cathedral says:

“Bryony’s inspiring work on this much-loved musical draws out beautiful insights into the many and varied themes contained in the Von Trapp story. Anyone viewing the film after reading this book will find they won’t just be watching a movie, but will be embarking on an adventure with God!”

Tony Horsfall, Author and Retreat Leader says:

“In this joy-filled book, Bryony has taken a familiar musical film and shown us how it speaks of God. Storylines and songs alike become windows to a deeper dimension, carefully crafted and beautifully written. A book to inspire and uplift, read it for yourself and buy it as a gift for someone special.”

Frances Finn, Broadcaster and Church of England Priest says:

“Hooray! A devotional book, which has as much fun and joy as it does depth. This is wonderfully inventive writing, a celebration of creativity, and a rare affirmation of media and the arts. I dare you to read it and not want to climb trees while dressed in curtains.”

Rev’d Dr Jenny Corcoran, Tutor for Lay Education, Practical Theology and Old Testament at St Augustine’s College of Theology says:

Bryony takes a unique approach to a film that means such a lot to so many people. Through sensitive engagement with the depth and detail of the story, Bryony draws out many parallels to the Christian life today, covering a wide range of topics such as conflict, play, and care for the environment. Helpful, gentle questions and a prayer are set out at the end of each section to encourage thoughtful engagement with the story, often with practical exercises to aid reflection. This is a lovely book for anyone who has fond memories of the film, or even those coming to it for the first time.

Judith Mayho, Registered Nurse and part of the leadership team at Tunbridge Wells Christian Centre says

‘Bryony writes in such a lovely and inspirational style to share gospel truths in a fun but thought-provoking way. An enjoyable read, this book of “musings” is easy to dip in and out of as each short chapter draws you into a scene, then leaves you pondering…’

Revd Kate Bottley Broadcaster and Anglican Priest says:

Bryony writes with humour and warmth as well as insight. You’ll never be able to watch singing nuns in quite the same way.

On Saturday 20th May we are launching my new book, ‘The Sound of Musings’, published by Instant Apostle. It follows the story of Maria, the postulant nun turned governess and looks at life, love and faith through the songs and drama of this much loved film.

It’s an accessible, entertaining and inspiring book, but don’t take my word for it…here’s the first of some lovely reviews that are already coming in…

More news about the book and its launch will follow, but meanwhile it would be great if you can follow /share/like posts on this or Instagram!
