📖 Part devotional, part celebration, always heartwarming. It’s the perfect companion for anyone who’s ever been captivated by Maria’s spirit.

🎶 The hills are alive… with 60 years of The Sound of Music! 🎉 This beloved classic first graced our screens 60 years ago this month, and we’re still swooning over spinning mountains and Do-Re-Mi.

✨ In The Sound of Musings, Bryony Wood invites us to journey through the film afresh — not just as fans, but as seekers of faith, joy, and purpose. Drawing from the story, songs and characters, she helps us reflect on what it means to trust God and live life in all its fullness — with a little help from a certain ‘flibbertigibbet’ governess.

The six sessions offer insights about living as God’s beloved child and ‘living the life you were born to live’. It’s perfect for church small groups and also accessible for those who are exploring faith. Suitable for all churches of all denominations and all sizes.

Each session includes ideas for opening worship and welcome and short extracts from the book with discussion starters to help participants explore the theme. There is, as you’d expect, a suggested film clip to watch; and each session ends with a sung blessing to a very familiar tune. The six sessions each last approximately two hours and are designed to be easy and simple to lead and inspiring and encouraging for all.

Just go to the Study Guide link and download your copy to share with your church.

On the agreed day, I arrive in plenty of time with my ‘mission kit’, complete with life-sized postulant nun and some books of course. You will have gathered a refreshments team who have been buttering bread, spreading jam and heating up a frozen crisp apple strudel or two in a nearby oven and brewing/mashing the tea. Then when all is set and people are settled, we are ready to begin- but where shall I start, I always ask. Someone will suggest the beginning is quite a good place… perhaps!

Since the book was published in May I’ve done around ten events in a wide range of churches up and down the country; from a small rural church with just an organist and no technology to a huge space in a busy town center church complete with 15-foot screen projecting images, singalong choir, and enthusiastic Bishop too.

What has been humbling to witness is the way people engage with the retelling of a familiar story that offers a fresh way of looking at faith. Church members bring friends who are just wondering about faith – and they too are touched. Barriers come down- hearts are opened because it’s a safe space, an honest space to explore God’s love and our identity as His beloved Child. We laugh and share together and discover something very special about the wonder of God’s grace. Numbers attending will always vary – because each church is so different, yet those who come invariably go away singing and smiling because God has done what he’s good at through the Holy Spirit, using the power of story and music.

When I launched this, I made a false assumption that it might be mainly older women (my age I guess!) who would engage with the theme and book and that they would all be avid ‘von Trapp’ fans. Yet, while there are lots of women coming along and buying the book too; it really has been all ages who engage, and lots of men have come and joined in, and connected with it too. More than once someone has said that they had never watched the movie before, but now going home to watch it with added incentive and perspective.

But perhaps it might be better for you to read what Judith Mayho wrote after The Sound of Musings Live visited Tunbridge Wells Christian Fellowship.

“Bryony came to join us at Tunbridge Wells Christian Fellowship Church for our ‘Ladies Brunch’ where she shared her ‘Sound of Musings’. She unpacked the film’s scenes and songs from a beautiful and awe-inspiring spiritual perspective.  Bryony’s presentation was open and honest about some vulnerable and personal life events that connected with many of the ladies present, but they all pointed to God and how He can impact one’s life in the most incredible and life-changing ways.

She evoked a roller coaster of emotions from fun and laughter to tears…..good tears, as every lady present was touched by the lovely way Bryony presented just a few excerpts from her book.

Some ladies had arrived at the brunch burdened by life struggles but left uplifted by the way we had shared such a great experience together, and the next morning in Church every lady who attended was still talking about how much they had enjoyed this wonderful event……..the effects were long-lasting in a very positive way.

Thank you, Bryony for coming all the way ‘down south’ to share with us and for leaving us inspired to seek more after God and all He has for us.”

A rather spectacular Tunbridge Wells brunch, complete with tea, and jam and bread of course!

It seems that it’s not just me being excited about The Sound of Musings (both the book and the ‘Live!’ event) as all kinds of people are getting enthusiastic about the way this links faith into an iconic film in a fun and accessible way. I might even find a way of watching them myself one day too!

The following Video interview with Mike Ivatt will also be played – without the visuals, on Radio Faversham.

Here’s a lovely and lively chat with Jonathan Ray at BBC Radio Bristol

While preparing for my talk on Trinity Sunday I checked, just on an off chance, and found that same Sunday schoolwork book tucked away in my ‘treasures box’ under the bed! Fifty years disappeared in an instant as I looked at those familiar pages with my colouring and filling in, and even a plan of the church where all the pews and altar and font were, and still are. How amazing to see those early seeds of faith and recognise how they later germinated to shape so much of who I am today

So it seemed fitting to return to Keynsham with both that foundational Sunday School book as well as my newly published book The Sound of Musings. I’ve been musing how we might never know the impact we have on other people, but impact we do! So what a privilege to be reminded that we can have a positive impact even if it takes many years to be fully fruitful.

And there was an extra special moment too when I found my photo on the iconic Keynsham Clocktower standing in the middle of the precinct. There, among other photos selected to represent Keynsham’s history and heritage, was our family photo, taken at my baby brother’s christening when I was a grumpy two-year-old-probably wanting my lunch! I might have moved away from Keynsham, but I do return to see my mum who still lives in the town. Its a place known by so many people, not least for how its spelt (KEYNSHAM!) and intrinsic to my early years while still holding a precious place in my heart and life today.

The photo at the top is me at that Clocktower with those ‘two books’, yesterday’s Sunday School workbook and today’s ‘Sound of Musings’ just published book. Special thanks to Revd Stephen McCaw, Rector at St John’s for making me so welcome – and to Ric Davison of KTCRfm- Keynsham’s Community Radio Station for inviting me to share my story on air.

One of the uncomfortable realities I’ve discovered about being an Author/Speaker is the need to read and post reviews and comments. We live in a world of ‘ vox pop reviewers’ and ‘customer feedback’ so it’s part of my life now…I am however very grateful and encouraged by the kind feedback and comments, so here you are:

John @ St Giles’ Church Balderton ‘Bryony is such an inspiration and her enthusiasm for both God and the film The Sound of Music came across very strongly. Who knew there was such a connection between the two? Her presentation struck a lovely balance between being entertaining, informative, and challenging. Thanks again for last night I really enjoyed it.’

Barbara @ All Hallows Ordsall. ‘What an amazing afternoon yesterday (at our Sound of Musings event) thank you so much you are very inspiring’

A guest at recent The Sound of Musings wrote; ‘I so enjoyed your presentation last night, The Sound of Musings is an incredible idea. It was lovely to hear your wise words that you delivered with such enthusiasm. TBH something shone out of you as you spoke, you light up the church…it glowed with a welcoming warmth.‘

Lucy @Eaton and Gamston Church ‘A huge Thank you Bryony for coming to Eaton for The Sound of Musings. It was lovely to be able to use our recently reordered Church to host the event. And everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves – I don’t think some of them wanted to go home!

There was cake of course – amazing themed cake and lots of edelweiss.

The afternoon was enriched by superb music with Revd Mark Cantril and his rich baritone vocals which filled the large church with the sounds of his music and our music.

The appreciative audience listened, laughed, clapped and sang along, it was truly an afternoon of joy. And then we drank tea and had lots of jam with bread and crisp apple strudel while also signing and selling books – many books…

And cap it all, one of my English Teachers came along too and didn’t give me any more homework! And now its out in the world- one little book that will hopefully bring smiles and hope to lots of different people.
