60th Anniversary of The Sound of Music

One of the most successful films ever made celebrates its Diamond Anniversary in 2025. This iconic musical of the flibbertigibbet nun who became a governess has won and warmed the hearts of millions across the world for six decades.

As a film, it won many awards, as a musical its songs have earned a place in every international songbook; as a love story, it has proved timeless. So it is truly fitting to look again this year at the unfolding drama between Maria, the spirited nun and her austere employer- the formidable Captain von Trapp.

Each song, each scene offers glimpses of stunning scenery and compelling characters. Each scene unfolds the challenges Maria faces, the joys and dangers that keep us riveted to the screen. And yes, while we know how the film ends, still we wonder; this time, will Rolf shoot his gun? Will the soldiers find the hidden family?

But beyond the drama, behind the scenes, songs, and characters there is another message. An unfolding love story of something, someone even more glorious, even bigger than the mountains. The invitation to join an eternal love story, the greatest love story of all time.

In each chapter of The Sound of Musings, we take a look at the bigger story beyond the film to see what it reveals about the creator of the mountains, the God that sustains the nuns. Each short ‘Musing’ is an insight, an offering to think afresh about life, love and faith. The Sound of Musings truly celebrates the film and builds on those songs and scenes playing out in 1930’s Salzberg. And then takes us on, to a new understanding of who we are as beloved children of God. All of us, seeking meaning, truth and hope – all of us called to live the life we are born to live.

This year, I invite you to look afresh at this wonderful, joyous film alongside reading more about the God who invites us all to climb every mountain with him, and ford every stream…
